Avalanche Summary

The most dangerous slopes face northwest, north, and northeast, but you can trigger a large and dangerous avalanche on many slopes facing west through north to southeast, especially at upper elevations near and above treeline. Several accidents and close calls over the weekend highlight how although it may feel like spring, it isn't underneath the snow surface. Don't expect to see any signs of instability before triggering large and destructive avalanches, and you can trigger them from a distance, so be aware of steep terrain above you. Safer travel options exist on south-facing slopes in the morning before the sun warms up the slopes, and you see some small loose avalanches on very steep, sunny slopes. You can always stick to low-angle terrain without steep slopes overhead to drastically reduce your chances of being caught in an avalanche.
