Avalanche Activity

NC for 24.12: Thaw, all levels. Localised instabilities on steep NE, E to S aspects above 950m. Unstable cornices. Moderate Hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: The snowpack will thaw and continue to consolidate at all altitudes. Localised instabilities will remain within deeper accumulations on North-East through East to South aspects mainly above 950 metres. Steep and convex locations such as coire rims, gully tops and crag aprons will be most affected. Cornices will be unstable. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Mild conditions with freezing levels above the summits throughout. Mostly dry with some light rain overnight. Gale to storm force winds will be generally West-South-Westerly in direction. Observed Weather Influences: Light snow showers became confined to summit levels during the afternoon as the freezing level rose to above the tops. Winds were strong Westerly in direction. ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack is beginning to consolidate at all altitudes; however widespread accumulations of unstable windslab remain on North-East through East to Southerly aspects above 900 metres. Areas especially affected are on steep and convex areas such as crag aprons, coire rims and the tops of gullies. On these aspects cornices are unstable. Better stability on steep banks below 900 metres. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
