Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Mild and stormy with the freezing level remaining above the summits. Strong to gale force West-South-Westerly winds will bring heavy persistent rain to the area. Rain is likely to ease on Monday afternoon, although there is only moderate confidence for this to happen. Observed Weather Influences: Mild with heavy rain at all levels. The freezing level was well above all the summits, plus 5 degrees celsius at 1100 metres and plus 12 degrees celsius at sea level. Winds and rain both intensified during the course of the day and the visibility was very poor. ObservedSnowStability: The snow cover is much depleted. The remaining snowpack has been saturated by rain and continues to thaw but is generally stable. The avalanche hazard is Low.
