Avalanche Activity

High avalanche danger will prevail. The off-piste conditions are dangerous.

The large quantity of fresh snow and the extensive wind slabs are very prone to triggering. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in all aspects above the tree line. As a consequence of new snow and strong wind natural avalanches are to be expected, even large ones. Avalanches can in isolated cases penetrate near-ground layers of the snowpack. This applies above approximately 2200 m. Midday and afternoon: With the end of the precipitation, the natural activity of slab avalanches will gradually decrease. On extremely steep sunny slopes dry loose snow avalanches are possible. In the event of prolonged bright spells this applies. Gradual decrease in avalanche danger. An increasing number of small and medium-sized gliding avalanches are to be expected on steep grassy slopes. They can be released at any time of day or night.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 40 to 60 cm of snow has fallen since Saturday. 20 to 30 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall until the evening. The wind will be strong at times. The various wind slabs have bonded poorly with each other and the old snowpack. Isolated avalanche prone weak layers exist in the bottom section of the old snowpack above approximately 2200 m.

Tendency

As a consequence of low temperatures the snowpack can settle hardly at all. The snowpack remains prone to triggering. Backcountry touring calls for caution and restraint.
