GC1/2 Rain all levels PM then returning to cooler and dry Wet snow instabilities in gullies and steep NE-SE slopes. Hazard Low

Forecast Snow Stability: Overnight the snowpack will become moist as light rain and milder conditions affect the area. A return to cooler and dry conditions will start to re-freeze the surface of the snowpack. Surface instabilities may persist in sheltered gullies and on North-East to South-Easterly aspects where any deeper accumulations of soft snow remain. Cornices will be fragile. The avalanche hazard will be Low.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Winds will be strong to gale force generally Westerly throughout the period. Precipitation on Monday evening will fall as snow initially on higher slopes before turning to rain at all levels as the freezing level rises well above the summits. A return to cooler and dry conditions later in the night and on Tuesday will see the freezing level lower to around 900 metres by the end of the day. Observed Weather Influences: Stormy conditions overnight gave new snow followed by a brief thaw with rain at most levels. Today has been mainly dry with a strong, cold North-Westerly airflow. The freezing level is around 600 metres. ObservedSnowStability: A breakable re-frozen crust has formed on much of the snowpack. Areas of windslab exist in localised areas with greatest accumulations around the tops of gullies and on Easterly aspects mainly above 950 metres. These areas are generally avoidable but where achieving depth stability is marginal. The avalanche hazard is Low.
