Avalanche Activity

The sometimes strong wind has transported the new snow. This applies especially at high altitude.

The wind slabs of the last few days can be released in some cases. These can especially at their margins be released, even by small loads in isolated cases, but they will be small in most cases. The avalanche prone locations are to be found especially in steep terrain at high altitude and adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls, in particular at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. Additionally avalanches can also be released in near-ground layers. Whumpfing sounds and the formation of shooting cracks when stepping on the snowpack serve as an alarm indicating the danger.

Snowpack Structure

The sometimes strong wind has transported the fresh and old snow significantly. As a consequence of a moderate to strong wind from easterly directions, wind slabs formed on Wednesday. In particular at intermediate and high altitudes snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. Faceted weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack at intermediate and high altitudes. In all aspects below approximately 2400 m less snow than usual is lying.

Tendency

The weather will be cold. The wind will be light to moderate in the vicinity of peaks. The avalanche danger will decrease gradually.
