New wind slabs could be found today at upper elevations where strong southwest winds are drifting loose surface snow into leeward terrain features. Last night, winds increased to over 50 mph at ridgetops. There is potential for blowing snow and new wind slab accumulation in isolated areas today. Snow plumes over ridges and blowing snow on the snow surface are indications that wind slabs may be building in your area. The size of new wind slabs should be limited by the amount of available snow above the treeline. Windward slopes have already been wind scoured and melt-freeze crusts are holding snow in place on south aspects. Reassess surface conditions as you encounter terrain features that block or re-direct wind and use extra caution when transitioning to steep terrain. Be on the lookout for fresh cohesive wind-deposited snow. Shooting cracks or hollow-sounding snow are good indications that the problem exists in the terrain around you.
