In sintesi

Heightened avalanche conditions exist. It’s possible you could trigger an avalanche 2 to 3 feet deep in steep terrain above 8,000 feet. Slopes facing northwest, through north, through east hold the weakest snow. Carefully assess steep shady slopes and give terrain traps a wide berth. Monitor steep sunny slopes for warming surfaces throughout the day. Move to shadier slopes if you encounter rollerballs or moist snow surfaces.

    Weak snow formed in January and early February is buried 2 to 3 feet deep. This problem is more pronounced on slopes that face the north half of the compass, where faceted snow was very well developed and remains buried. The hazard is also elevated in steep rocky terrain and on previously wind-loaded slopes. You may or may not see warning signs like large collapses or other recent avalanches. Careful assessment of the snowpack is required before committing to steep terrain. Small terrain traps can have big consequences.

    This avalanche might look small relative to big peaks around it, but could easily bury or injure you.

Yesterday, snow surfaces below 8,500 feet were wet from warm temperatures and rain at low elevations. Below 8,000 feet, many aspects had isothermal snow. Overnight temperatures at 8,500 feet dipped below freezing as skies cleared, but it was not a hard freeze. The Salt River and Wyoming Ranges could have some lingering cloud cover that will help keep surfaces cool, but if the sun comes out early, expect crusts to thaw quickly in the sun today. Wet loose avalanches will be possible on very steep, low and mid-elevation slopes facing the sun and could entrain more snow than you expect. If you see rollerballs or encounter slushy snow, move to shadier aspects and minimize time spent under steep sunny slopes.
