In sintesi

Avalanches will remain unlikely for Sunday in the Newberry Monument zone. It is wise to always consider avalanches when travelling in backcountry terrain and use best practices such as carrying avalanche rescue gear and exposing one rider at a time to steep slopes.

Avalanche Discussion

We've now gone over two weeks since any new snow, and during that time weather conditions have remained fairly consistent. Slopes with any sun exposure have mostly a firm crust, with limited south slopes getting soft corn snow. Shaded, sheltered slopes with open sky cover are still holding dry snow, and I actually found pretty good (albeit not super sustained) skiing on the steep, sparsely treed northeast aspect of the summit bowl due to this "recycled powder" (i.e. facets). With regular inversions to start the day, colder zones down low (especially by the lake where there is higher RH) have been having the most pronounced faceting and surface hoar. I will say, despite having as low of tide as anywhere, it's been pleasant touring days in the Newberry zone during this high pressure spell, and I've been able to consistently find pockets with good riding.
