A persistent weak layer (PWL) of decomposing surface hoar and near-surface facets lies 45-55 cm (18-24") beneath the snow surface. This PWL was responsible for several human-triggered avalanches since last Tuesday (01/10). You are most likely to find this PWL on aspects that face the northern half of the compass and at elevations above 7000'. In the southern portion of our advisory area (West Mountain), the buried surface hoar was much more preserved and therefore very sensitive. Snowmobile-triggered avalanches were reported as recently as Sunday (01/15) (Public Observation here). In the northern part of our advisory area, the surface hoar is decomposing and small-grained facets are more of the culprit in these areas.
This is the third PWL that has been buried this season. Each one has created avalanches and then slowly becomes stubborn (more difficult to trigger). Snowmobilers and snowbikers will be more likely to trigger these avalanches than skiers and snowboarders. As these persistent slab avalanches become more difficult to trigger, folks should still be thinking about the impacts of a large (D2) avalanche.
