In sintesi

Triggering avalanches will be possible near treeline and above treeline, primarily on slopes that have accumulated wind drifted snow. Sticking to more scoured slopes or low angle terrain is a good strategy to minimize your exposure to these avalanches. Ease into the terrain and be cautious on and around deep drifts.

    This problem will be more prominent in the upper elevations above treeline where more snow fell on Tuesday. At the upper elevations, wind slabs have the potential to be deeper and more widespread. At near treeline elevations, keep a lookout for isolated pockets of wind slab. On Wednesday I observed light blowing snow near treeline and found wind slabs up to 12" deep on isolated features. I did not encounter any reactive wind slabs, but there is a lot of terrain out there and it is worth doing some investigation before committing to avalanche terrain. Using small safe test slopes is a good way to check for depth and reactivity of wind slabs before entering onto larger slopes. Look for cracking in the slab or small avalanches releasing; these are good indicators of unstable snow. 

     

     

Avalanche Discussion

Keep an eye on changing surface conditions as the day warms up, especially on slopes in the direct sun. If you see rollerballs or pinwheels recognize these as precursors to wet loose avalanches. If you see these signs, consider moving to more shaded slopes or lower angle terrain.

Isolated weak layers have been found in the upper and mid-pack, primarily on north and northeast facing slopes near treeline and below treeline.  Observers have found some broken buried surface hoar down 50 cm and some near crust facets above the 2/8 rain crust (down 60 - 70 cm). We are not currently expecting any avalanches on these layers, but they are something to check on if you plan on riding consequential steep lines in these areas.
