As new snow and mixed precipitation accumulates throughout the day, avalanche conditions will become dangerous. You could trigger an avalanche in wind drifted snow on north, east, and south slopes, at middle and upper elevations, that is big enough to bury a person. If you are finding deeper snow or the precipitation is changing, use caution in steep terrain.

    Today new snow and wind will create reactive wind slabs at middle and upper elevations on north, east and south aspects (N, NE, E, SE, S). These wind slabs will grow in size as new snow accumulates and could be large enough to bury a person. As the snow transitions to freezing rain and rain later today, expect these new wind slabs to become more sensitive to triggers and may avalanche naturally. If you are noticing deeper snow accumulation underfoot or the precipitation type is changing, make conservative terrain choices and use caution on steep slopes.

Avalanche Discussion

Yesterday extreme northwest winds continued to scour snow surfaces. Isolated pockets of unstable snow were found in lee aspects at middle elevations but overall the snowpack was generally stable.

A winter storm will bring 1-3 inches of snow, along with sleet, freezing rain and rain later to the forecast area today. As new snow accumulates this morning and this afternoon, reactive wind slabs will develop that could be large enough to bury a person. These will be found at the upper and middle elevations on north through east through south aspects. As temperatures warm later in the afternoon and evening, the snow will transition to sleet, freezing rain and then rain. This change in precipitation will increase the sensitivity of new wind slabs throughout the terrain. There is uncertainty to the timing of the transition, but expect ravines to transition to mixed precipitation earlier than summits. Watch for deeper snow, a change in boot penetration and a change in precipitation type to indicate the snowpack is becoming unstable and use conservative terrain choices to help avoid the avalanche hazard.
