LOW avalanche danger persists at all elevations. Loose wet avalanching resulting from daytime warming will be the main concern for the backcountry enthusiast today. Monitor for changing conditions, be on the lookout for rockfall as temperatures rise today, and be ready for rising hazard as the day progresses.

    Warm overnight temperatures and some mild green housing led to a weak refreeze last night. Expect surface snow to soften quickly today as sunny skies and strong April sun impact the forecast area. Easterly and northerly aspects contain a more transitional snowpack and may be areas where loose wet sloughing is most likely. Particularly near and below treeline, areas near rock out croppings or cliff bands, and tight couloirs with solar inputs where the effects of warming are amplified.  Keep an eye out for early warning signs such as moist punchy surface snow, rollerballs & pinwheels, and increasing boot and ski penetration. These are clues that may foreshadow larger point-release avalanches. Be wary of your exposure to terrain hazards and be prepared to retreat to more shaded aspects and lower angle terrain if you notice that surface warming is reaching concerning levels.

Avalanche Discussion

In addition to the risk of surface warming today, thin coverage and variable surface conditions should remain top of mind. It is important to get an early start and factor in extra time for your chosen objectives these days. Warm overnight temperatures and partly cloudy skies led to a superficial refreeze. Expect surface snow to transition quickly from frozen and supportable to moist and unconsolidated. In addition, many approaches are becoming difficult and arduous. Large areas of dry ground, melting lakes, and rising creeks are common throughout the range and may complicate access. Getting an early start is also prudent to limit your exposure to rising hazard and to maximize your potential for pleasant sliding conditions. Expect to use boot and or ski crampons and an ice ax while slopes are frozen on the ascent and be prepared to retreat before surface snow becomes unconsolidated and unstable.  Tis' the season to “bring the metal”, prepare for pre-dawn starts, and be back at the car with daylight to spare.
