Generally stable avalanche conditions have developed with colder temperatures overnight allowing for a solid freeze of snow surfaces. Wet snow avalanches could occur by the afternoon if snow becomes wet and unstable. Seek cooler, more supportable slopes today and do not rule out wet slab avalanches on very steep complex terrain around rocks.

    Wet snow avalanches, primarily as wet loose, could occur this afternoon if skies clear during the peak heat of the day. The chance of wet slab avalanches up to 2 feet deep has decreased thanks to a solid freeze with cold temperatures last night. Due to the unpredictable nature of these avalanches, we can’t rule them out completely until temperatures cool for a longer period of time. Complex terrain around rocks and cliffs that heat surrounding snow on very steep slopes over 35° is where these avalanches could occur. Limit exposure on or around this type of terrain by the afternoon if snow surfaces become wet and unsupportable. Look for signs of the snow surfaces destabilizing such as wet snow, rollerballs, or natural wet avalanches. Although even less likely, wet avalanches could occur in isolated areas in the upper elevations.

We have trended towards a more stable snowpack as temperatures dropped well below freezing last night. A longer duration of freezing temperatures is necessary before the top 1-2 feet of the snowpack is completely locked up. Wet snow may still exist below surface crusts. Dig down to determine if there is still wet snow underneath any thin crusts. If snow surfaces remain relatively firm and supportable then wet avalanches will be even less likely. As temperature increases through the day and skies clear, monitor snow surfaces becoming wetter. Sinking into wet snow above your boot is a clear sign that the snowpack is destabilizing. If this occurs, seek cooler terrain with drier snow. Enjoy the stable conditions before we enter a more active weather pattern this upcoming week.
