In sintesi

Weak layers buried 2-3 feet deep remain possible to trigger on complex terrain over 35° steep where the overlying slab is shallow and wind affected. Evaluate the terrain carefully to identify slopes where the consequences of triggering a larger, dangerous are more consequential such as above terrain traps. New snow accumulation remains low and should not influence the avalanche danger.

    Weak layers are most likely to be triggered where the slab is 2-3 feet thick and on very steep slopes over 35 degrees. Signs of instability such as cracking, collapsing, or recent avalanches may not be present before triggering a dangerous avalanche. Multiple tracks on a slope do not indicate stability with this problem type. Large triggers such as a cornice fall or multiple riders on a slope increase the odds of triggering a persistent slab. Suspect terrain includes very steep, rocky, and/or wind affected slopes where thin spots exist making it possible for humans to impact buried weak layers. 

    Persistent slab avalanches are capable of propagating widely across or up a slope. For this reason, it is not out of the question to trigger a larger hard slab avalanche with depths over 5 feet as a result of hitting a thin, shallow portion of the slope. Heavily wind affected slopes are where these avalanches could break deeper, such as this very large persistent slab on Lava Mountain that occurred on February 10th.

Avalanche Discussion

Only 1-2 inches of snow is possible on Togwotee during the day. New snow could bond poorly to weak surfaces formed over the last several days including crusts on southerly aspects. Luckily any new snow instability will be harmless, except to a squirrel. Another pulse of snow this evening could increase the potential of any new snow stability and fresh wind slabs formed by tomorrow. The main concern today is the deep persistent slab problem, which we have including on northerly aspects in the middle elevation as we gain more information about how the snowpack transitioned during the recent warming trend. The snowpack has not full transition to a stable, spring snowpack on middle elevation northerly aspects or upper elevation terrain across all aspects.
