In sintesi

For Sunday, triggering an avalanche will be likely at mid and upper elevations and possible at lower elevations. We will continue to have wind slabs, storm slabs, and dry loose avalanche danger. Be conservative in steep and committing terrain, and if you see any signs of unstable snow, stick to lower angle slopes.

    While touring on Saturday, I was able to trigger small wind slabs on indicator slopes and observed cracking in the snow on north, east, and southerly aspects. Natural wind slab avalanches were also observed on northern and northeasterly slopes near and above treeline. With over 32" of new snow in the past 48 hours and plenty of snow available for transport, wind slabs will continue to be likely.

    Wind slabs can often be found below ridgelines and terrain features that collect snow. Burn zones in lower elevations can also harbor wind slabs. While traveling, look for signs of wind deposited snow such as pillow-like features and wind rippled surface. As you travel look for small, safe, and steep (35-45 degrees) test slopes to assess for instabilities. If you see any signs of unstable snow, seek terrain below 30 degrees.

    Skier triggered and natural storm slabs were observed below treeline on Saturday. For Sunday, storm slabs will continue to be possible on all elevations and aspects.  

    Steep and unsupported slopes are likely trigger points for storm slabs. Consider easing into the terrain by starting on smaller and planar slopes. Look for clues of slab formation such as cohesion, cracking,  and/or recent avalanches. As always, if you encounter any unstable snow, stick to lower angle terrain.

    Dry loose avalanches were easily triggered on Satruday in steep terrain. With cold temps I suspect this avalanche problem will continue into Sunday. Dry loose avalanches start at your feet and entrain surface snow while sliding down hill. I suspect most of these avalanches will be on the small side, but be mindful in steep and committing terrain. Be especially cautious near terrain traps such as cliffs, trees, gullys, etc. Consider using sluff management techniques if traveling in steep terrain.

Large cornices were observed today on northerly aspects at ridge tops. Continue to give cornices plenty of space as they have a tendancy of breaking off farther back than expected.

With significant amounts of new snow and some partly sunny skies for Sunday, use conservative decision making specifically near treeline and in the alpine.
