You aren't likely to receive obvious signs of instability before triggering a deadly avalanche that breaks 2-4 ft deep. Unfortunately, you can trigger these large avalanches after many riders have crossed a slope. So don't be the unlucky one; consider sticking to well-supported features and avoiding travel on and below steep, open slopes.

    This is a low-likelihood, high-consequence problem right now. Unfortunately, you may not receive much feedback, but you can still trigger large, surprising avalanches that break several feet deep. It's best to assume this problem exists on all upper and middle-elevation slopes and possibly shadier lower-elevation slopes. These avalanches will be large enough to bury and kill you. Although the slides will be largest in wind-loaded terrain, you can encounter this problem on all steep slopes, including those sheltered from the wind. 

    Neighboring zones continue to report large avalanches failing on the Solstice crust. On Wednesday, the Mission Ridge Pro Patrol reported triggering D2-sized avalanches breaking up to 3 ft deep on the solstice crust in wind-loaded terrain off the ridge. To the west, the reported avalanches have only been bigger and more frequent. The Crystal Mtn Pro Patrol continues to report very large (D3) avalanches breaking on a similar layer as recently as Thursday. This past weekend, a rider in the Manastash Ridge area remotely triggered one of these avalanches that likely broke on the Solstice crust as well. 

    Plenty of evidence supports that this problem is widespread throughout the region. So continue to reduce your exposure by choosing simple terrain less than 30 degrees and avoid travel under large, open slopes. Persistent slab problems require persistent patience. 

    The last known persistent slab avalanche in the east-south was remotely triggered on January 20th.

Avalanche Discussion

Friday will be the calm before the storm and really before conditions get stinkin' dangerous. The Pacific Northwest is heading into a warm and wet weekend. While the forecast water numbers are not super impressive by atmospheric river standards, the sharp warming and rain on a dry layered snowpack will surely be the bigger story. In many areas, the common theme is the weak snowpack structure that has been producing avalanches as recently as Thursday in neighboring zones. So look for dangerous avalanche conditions to develop Friday evening into Saturday as the rain starts falling on a troubled snowpack.
