In sintesi

A wind event this week coupled with new snow created fresh wind slabs in and above the treeline. This wind-compacted snow buried below the surface has a masked appearance and could be triggered by a rider or a machine. Continue to evaluate your terrain choices carefully with this possibility in mind.

    We saw evidence of a few natural avalanches on Thursday morning from the wind-driven snow on Wednesday. Steep and exposed slopes in the Alpine had the most vulnerability to this problem. The wind was intense on Wednesday across the forecast area. The slab was hiding under 20 cm of light and unconsolidated snow, it cannot be seen at the surface in most areas. Pit results on a slope near Sonora Pass revealed breaks in the snow 50 cm from the surface. Compression tests broke 50 cm down, from the elbow (moderate), Quality 1 shear. ECTs had mixed results, the first test had propagation (from the shoulder), and the second test did not produce a fracture.

Avalanche Discussion

As snowfall totals have been piling up it has become harder to find the buried weak layer at the bottom of the pack. For now, we have decided to remove the persistent slab problem from our problem list.  The highest degree of uncertainty remains in and above the treeline on complex north-facing terrain. Take caution when engaging with this terrain, weak sugary snow at the bottom of the pack could still be reactive here. If you find any of this snow please reach out to the forecasting team. Outside of the persistent slab problem that has been removed, wind-driven snow is the other main concern. We found light unconsolidated snow on the surface and 1 finger density snow below that. Temperatures have remained below freezing and this density change has a soft transition between the 2 layers.
