Snake River Range

Avalanches are unlikely in the majority of terrain today. Generally stable conditions exist, but be on the lookout for isolated pockets of unstable snow in very steep terrain at the highest elevations.

The Snake River Range has just undergone the first real spring “melt/freeze” cycle of the season. Above freezing daytime temperatures and solid overnight freezes have occurred during the past four days of clear weather. Small wet avalanches have been observed and surface crusts have developed on most aspects. Temperatures have cooled off and overcast conditions are expected today. As a result, the snowpack has gained considerable strength making avalanches unlikely at all elevation bands. 

Several inches of new snow accompanied by light to moderate winds are expected by evening in the Snakes though this should do little to elevate the avalanche hazard. Still, LOW danger does not mean no danger. Isolated pockets of unstable wind slab could be found in very steep terrain in the highest reaches of the forecast zone, especially if today's snowfall overproduces. Cornices have grown large and failures have been reported during the recent warm spell. Despite colder temperatures, terrain under large cornices should still be given a healthy margin. Be on the lookout for isolated instabilities today and be prepared to change plans if the actual weather conditions do not match the forecast.
