In sintesi

It will be possible to trigger an avalanche in wind blown snow; primarily on North and East slopes beneath ridgelines.  Some of these avalanches could be large.  If you choose to ride on open slopes near treeline or in the alpine, evaluate the snow on slopes that are less than 30 degrees before committing to steeper slopes.

On Monday I observed Strong South and Southwest winds and Intense blowing snow near treeline.  Looking at weather throughout the region, it seems like I picked a particularly windy spot to ride.  That is typical of many of these spring storms.  Winds and snowfall can vary throughout the zone.   Weather stations throughout the zone recorded wind speeds of at least Moderate and that is plenty strong enough to efficiently move snow.  I have also observed a fair bit of graupel during the last two days, which can sometimes act as a weak layer.

Wind Slabs on Tuesday may be small and limited to our most recent storm snow, but they may also be large and involve all of the snow we've received since last week (about a foot in sheltered locations but as much as 2-3 feet in wind loaded spots).

Avalanche Discussion

I have forecast the avalanche danger as Moderate on Tuesday because of where potential avalanches will be located in the terrain, and the travel advice regarding identifying those most dangerous slopes.  The reality is that the hazard probably exists somewhere between Moderate and Considerable because of the potential for large avalanches on those slopes.  Tuesday is a good day to start conservatively if you choose to travel on North and East slopes that may be wind loaded.
