In sintesi

After freezing overnight, the snowpack is mostly stable this morning at all elevations. As the day warms, the chance for shallow wet loose slides will increase on sunlit slopes. While small, these slides could still carry serious consequences in cliff areas, above hanging snowfields and in long, sustained couloirs. The chance for cornice failures will also be on the rise. Get an early start, monitor the impact of the sun, and transition to shaded terrain if crusts break down and snow surfaces start to become wet. Increasing cloud cover is expected to help mitigate the impact of the sun in the afternoon. If skies remain mostly clear after midday, the threat of wet slides will continue to increase.

Avalanche Discussion

Southwesterly flow aloft will bring a fast-moving Pacific disturbance through the region tonight. Mountain snow and valley rain will begin this evening before snow levels drop down to the valley floor overnight. Snowfall will begin to taper off in the morning after depositing two to four inches in the higher elevations. As the day progresses, cloud cover will be on the decrease. Overnight lows in the mountains will be in the upper teens before rising to near 30 in the afternoon. In the valleys, temperatures should drop below freezing overnight before climbing into the mid to upper 30s during the day. Southwesterly ridgetop winds will range from 10 to 20 miles per hour. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be Low on Sunday. The limited amount of snowfall will accumulate on warm snow surfaces, strong winds are not anticipated and avalanche activity is not expected at the mid and upper elevations. Normal caution is advised. If overnight temperatures remain above freezing at the lower elevations, small wet slides might be possible in the afternoon if skies become mostly sunny.
