Weak layers of sugary facets are now buried 1 to 5 feet below the snow’s surface. Large or multiple triggers, or crossing a thin spot in the slab may still release a very large and destructive avalanche. Although the chance of triggering an avalanche on this weak layer has become very unlikely, it is NOT impossible. Steep, unsupported slopes on northerly aspects are the most likely locations to find a trigger point. A significant avalanche cycle involving very large slabs occurred ten days ago on these weak layers.
