Avalanche Activity

New snow and wind slabs represent the main danger. This applies in particular in the regions exposed to heavier precipitation.

As a consequence of new snow and a strong wind from northwesterly directions, wind slabs formed over a wide area. This applies in particular in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain especially above the tree line. New snow and wind slabs can be released, even by a single winter sport participant and reach large size. Additionally avalanches can also be released in deep layers and reach very large size in isolated cases in particular on shady slopes. Meticulous route selection is required. Maintaining distances between individuals and one-at-a-time descents are recommended.

Snowpack Structure

10 to 20 cm of snow fell on Wednesday above approximately 1500 m. Over a wide area 10 to 20 cm of snow fell on Thursday above approximately 1800 m. As a consequence of new snow and a moderate to strong wind from northwesterly directions, further wind slabs formed in particular above the tree line. The new snow and wind slabs are lying on soft layers on wind-protected shady slopes. Intermediate and high altitudes: Large-grained weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack in particular on shady slopes. High altitudes and the high Alpine regions: The sometimes strong wind has transported the fresh and old snow significantly. Some snow will fall from the afternoon.
