At the upper elevations small pockets of dense new wind slab pose a hazard to skiers and riders . These slabs can be human triggered in steep terrain and could carry people over cliffs or for long distances in very steep chutes. Evaluate terrain carefully and consider the consequences of triggering a slide in that terrain. Avalanches are unlikely at the mid and lower elevations.
At the upper elevations winds that veered from the south to the west-northwest have formed dense pockets of new wind slab. These slabs lie upon sun crusts and firm old snow surfaces. They could be human triggered in steep wind loaded avalanche starting zones, on steep rollovers and in cliff areas with depths to one foot.
Dry conditions are expected overnight and into the morning hours on Tuesday. A weak disturbance could move in during the afternoon and evening and bring several inches of new snow to the higher elevations by Wednesday morning. Temperatures are forecast to fall into the teens tonight and rise into the 20s in the mountains and into the 30s in the valleys during the day. Winds will be light and variable.The snowpack is mostly stable with a few concerns at the upper elevations in all three of our forecast areas. In the Teton Range, isolated pockets of shallow wind slab less than foot in depth could be human triggered in very steep terrain at the upper elevations. In the Greys River area there are isolated locations at the upper elevations where some potential to trigger deep slab avalanches may persist. In the Togwotee Pass area some potential may also persist for snowmobiles to trigger deep hard slab avalanches in some steep upper elevation avalanche paths. The general avalanche is expected to be LOW in the Teton area and MODERATE in the Greys River and Togwotee Pass areas.
