In sintesi

North and most recently South Gusty Winds have formed sensitive slabs near ridgelines and cornices. Use caution in wind-loaded steep terrain...Carefully evaluate the upper 1-2 feet of the snowpack for sensitive persistent weak layers before approaching slopes steeper than 30 degrees, especially on Northern aspects in the Southern end of our advisory area.

    Winds over the last 48 hours have gusted into the 20s out of the North and now out of the South. Yesterday in the Poison drainage just South of Tamarack Ski Resort we observed Mderate wind loading and some natural activity starting to ramp up: small pieces of the cornices shedding off and causing a small loose D1 avalanche on a NE aspect.

    Avoid wind-loaded slopes that are steeper than 30 degrees. If you are seeing red flags like cracking and or are hearing whumping noises in the snowpack find another, lower angle-safer route.

    In the upper 1-2 feet of the snowpack on West mountain, we have some really weak layers of facets and pieces of surface hoar that some might refer to as sugar or sand.  Not all areas of our advisory area have had such a consistent delivery of sensitive buried weak layers that people have been able to trigger, but use caution wherever you plan to travel on slopes that are steep enough to slide especially on Northern aspects.

    A quick hasty or hand pit will likely reveal the weak layers in the upper foot of the snowpack.

Human triggered avalanches in wind loaded and steep terrrain are possible right now, and more likely in our Southern portion of the advisory area (West Mtn, Tamarack, Council Mtn, No Businiess). We have had a lot of cold days with winds from all over the compass and some of the upper elevation ridges and shoulders of mountains are shallow ans faceted from their rocky base...the snow is weak and we have observed weak layers of buried surface hoar and facets failing in our pits moderately to isolation in the upper foot. Snowmobiles and snowboarders were not hurt while triggerring avalanches on Saturday under warm sunny skies in Poison Cr South of Tamarack Resort and In Tamarack Falls Bowl North of Tamarack.
