In sintesi

Avalance danger is rising today with a fast-moving storm that will bring strong winds and new snow. Expect wind-driven slabs to be sensitive on ridges and in catchment areas. Shooting cracks on the surface or whumpfing sounds in the snowpack are some of the red flags of wind slab instability, make a plan that allows for rapidly changing conditions.

As the storm impacts our area today, expect wind slabs to form on leeward aspects. Depending on the wind's intensity and snow distribution, new slabs can form in sheltered locations like a gully, a leeward side of a ridge, or a mid-slope convexity. New snow can be sensitive to human triggering as wind-driven snow piles up much faster than it falls from the sky. If in doubt consider sticking to lower-angled slopes today especially if visibility is obscured.

Wind-driven snow that spills over and around terrain can rapidly load a slope as seen in this small naturally triggered avalanche.

Avalanche Discussion

We were on the lookout for wind slabs yesterday in the Horse Creek area. What we found was scoured and slick snow surfaces. Isolated and sheltered locations held snow that had limited boot penetration. Overall, the terrain had been hammered by the wind. We found hard windboard snow in NTL and ABT terrain on northerly aspects. As shown in the photos, a slick surface crust was also present on the valley floor. Leaving Twin Lakes Campground we kept the boards on our backs till we got to the top of the first bench.

The new storm that enters the forecast area will require a reassessment of conditions. Depending on the amount of snow that falls today,  we could see little change or a more dynamic wind slab problem. The storm doesn't look like it will start to impact the area till this afternoon, most of the change should occur in the second half of the day.
