In sintesi

Warming temperatures with sunny skies are expected to form unstable wet snow today as daytime warming occurs.  Slabs of wind-blown snow could still be problematic for backcountry users below ridges and in gully features.  Identify where unstable snow may exist and move around these areas of concern.

    Warming temperatures, decreasing NE-E winds, and strong April sunshine will cause unstable wet snow to form as daytime warming occurs today.   Another 5 degrees of warming is expected today along with the recent NE-E winds decreasing to light with additional warming expected over the next few days.  Snow surface melt will spread to northerly aspects today and to higher elevations that have still been holding colder winter snow.  Roller balls and pinwheels will form in many locations today with larger wet loose avalanches possible as daytime warming occurs.

    Roller balls and pinwheels will be indicators that larger wet loose avalanches are becoming possible.  As the snow surface becomes deep and wet, it's time to move away from avalanche terrain or change aspects to where colder snow exists.

    Recent NE-E winds have continued to transport snow yesterday and overnight in near and above treeline areas.  Winds have started to decrease in speed and are expected to be light later today.  These wind slabs that have formed are expected to gain strength today, but could still be problematic in some areas for backcountry users.  Larger wind slabs could exist in areas that received more snow during our last Thur/Fri storm.

    Look for signs of previous wind transport like snow surface scouring, recently formed wind pillows, or newer cornice formation.  These NE-E winds could cross load slopes with recent avalanches reported mid slope.  Any cracking in newly deposited snow could indicate unstable wind slab.  Move around any suspect areas of concern.

Avalanche Discussion

Large to very large cornices exist along ridgelines on NW-N-NE-E-SE aspects.  Recent NE-E winds have eroded and scoured some of these cornices with cooler temperatures.  A warming trend will continue this week with winds decreasing to light today.  Cornice fall will become more of a concern as this warming trend continues.
