    New snow and wind over the last 5 days has created unstable conditions. Slabs ranging from 1-4 feet in depth could be triggered on wind loaded terrain in the middle and upper elevations. Avalanches have the potential to break farther and wider than expected. Give terrain a wide berth and be aware of terrain above today.

    Little Tucks natural avalanche crown taken from Mount Glory in the Teton zone which likely occured early on Dec 20th. Natural activity is possible in the Salt and Wyoming ranges today in similar terrain.

    Weak snow that formed in November sits near the base of the snowpack. While triggering an avalanche at these layers is low on the likelihood scale, the potential exists for avalanches failing in the upper portion of the snowpack to be large enough to break through the Dec 10th crust and create very large avalanches.

Avalanche Discussion

It has been five days since a series of storms began impacting the region. Prior to these storms the weather was warm and dry for over a week. A storm that ended on Dec 10th laid down rain and a subsequent crust up to 10,000 feet. 

Initial bonding between the Dec 10th crust and the new snow from this past week was good. Temperatures were mild and the snow was able to adhere to the crust. Since that time a series of slabs has been built on that crust, likely ranging from 2-4 feet. While observations have been limited from the Salt and Wyoming ranges during this period, activity observed in neighboring ranges indicate that the snowpack is unstable in many areas. The snowpack has gone through rapid change in the last 24-48 hours, which generally translates to an increase in avalanche potential.
