In sintesi

Small avalanches will be possible today, especially in areas where the most new snow has accumulated. Wet loose avalanches will become possible near and above treeline this afternoon, and stubborn wind slabs may linger in exposed terrain. Evaluate slopes with these problems in mind, and consider the exposure and consequences of a possible avalanche. Seek out simpler terrain or lower-angle slopes to reduce your vulnerability.

    Anywhere from 0 to 6 inches of snow fell in the last storm, with Mammoth and Tioga measuring the most, and areas around Bishop seeing the least. Strong April sun means that all aspects will see direct sunlight at some point during the day. It will warm the new snow, and small wet loose avalanches will become possible. Expect this problem near and above treeline, as most areas below treeline just don't have enough snow. The most new snow has been deposited by recent winds on northwest through north and east aspects. 

    Small wet loose avalanches in steep and complex terrain may be enough to get a rider in trouble. Consider your exposure and consequence, time of day, and amount of new snow before committing to steep slopes today.

  • Wind Slabs

    Small, stubborn wind slabs may linger in terrain near and above treeline today. Strong to extreme winds have blown new snow around and deposited it on the lee side of ridges, in protected bowls, and in the bottoms of gullies. The fresh snow creates a sharp contrast to our old surfaces. Look for smooth, clean snow on the downwind sides of ridges, and in bowls, gullies and couloir features. Recent avalanches, stiff, hollow snow, and cracking that extends out from your skis are signs that you may encounter a wind slab.

    Small wind slabs may have heightened consequences in exposed terrain. Take this into consideration as you evaluate your plan for the day. You can reduce your exposure by choosing simpler terrain or lower-angle slopes.

Avalanche Discussion

Small amounts of new snow fell over the past few days throughout the forecast area. Strong to extreme winds made exact totals hard to measure, but the highest totals were around Mammoth and north.

While this snow did little to improve coverage, it has changed surface conditions, particularly near and above treeline. Expect old, scoured surfaces to be firm and slippery - especially in the morning. The new snow is mostly wind affected, and may be soft, punchy, or stiff and supportable. Expect new snow to become warm and sticky at times as it transitions. 

Breezy northeast winds today may continue to blow small amounts of snow around, and will likely feel chilly in the alpine or on exposed ridges.

Lower elevations continue to melt, and access is becoming tricky at times. Many approaches involve dry ground or pavement, especially below 9500 ft. Water hazards including melting lakes and fast-flowing creeks should be taken into consideration.
