In sintesi

There is still a chance that a person could trigger a large avalanche 2 to 3’ deep on a layer of buried surface hoar. These avalanches can propagate across slopes and be triggered remotely. This is a tricky problem to assess so we continue to recommend sticking to lower angle terrain and avoiding being on or under large slopes.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Avalanche Accident: We are deeply saddened to report that a snowmachiner passed away in an avalanche on the backside of Seattle Ridge yesterday at Turnagain Pass. This occurred in Warmup Bowl, also known as -1 Bowl. AK State Troopers will be conducting the recovery today and we ask that people avoid the area. Avalanche Center staff will be visiting the site and will compile a preliminary report today with a full report as soon as possible.     Recent Avalanches: There was an avalanche on the south side of Marathon Mtn near Lowell Canyon at the end of last week, pictured here. It is a reminder that traveling under avalanche paths does expose us to risk.

    Our biggest concern is that someone could trigger a large avalanche on a layer of buried surface hoar 2 to 3’ deep that has been responsible for many human triggered avalanches in Turnagain Pass, including the fatal avalanche that occurred yesterday. That being said, the avalanche mentioned above is the only slide we've heard of recently. This may be because there has been less traffic in the Seward/Lost Lake region. It is also possible that the problem layer does not exist in as many areas here. 

    The weak layer causing so many issues is notorious for showing no signs the slope is dangerous until it slides. We are seeing people trigger avalanches on slopes with many tracks on them. Slopes are being triggered where the layer does not appear to exist or does not seem concerning in snow tests. The avalanches we have been seeing are large and in some cases very wide and can be triggered remotely. This means that you may not even be on a steep slope to trigger an avalanche above you. 

    A conservative mindset may change how to think about this unique and dangerous problem. If you try to outsmart it there is an increased chance you may trigger a large and highly consequential avalanche. Hence, sticking to the mellow terrain is a great way to have fun without worry of an avalanche.

    A bump in easterly winds yesterday evening may have created some small wind slabs near ridges and exposed areas. These could be up to a foot deep and scatted along the top of slopes. A smaller wind slab has the potential to trigger a larger slab below. 

    Other concerns to keep in mind: limit time spent under cornices and give them a lot of room on ridges. Minimize time spent under glide cracks and avoid them if possible because the can release into a large glide avalanche.
