In sintesi

New snow, strong winds, and warming temperatures will create overlapping avalanche problems above 6000 ft on Tuesday. Simplify your terrain if you notice warming snow surfaces or active wind loading at upper elevations. Surfaces may remain slick on scoured slopes and alpine terrain, so be sure to equip yourself with the appropriate mountaineering gear and consider the consequences of a fall before climbing or riding in steep terrain.

    Precipitation will change over to snow as freezing levels drop on Monday evening. Most precipitation will likely fall as snow above 7,000 ft. The winds will remain at strong transport speeds, drifting new accumulations into thin slabs along leeward terrain features. These won’t be big, but they could easily trigger where they form over icy surfaces. Look for blowing snow and textured surfaces to help you identify where wind slabs may lurk. Keep in mind that any triggered wind slab could turn into a long, sliding fall and wouldn’t be a pretty ride with all the early-season obstacles that plague our volcano.

    Snow levels will stay high enough for one more day to maintain wet avalanche concerns at middle and upper elevation terrain. Any triggered wet loose will likely remain small and entrain new accumulations that fall on Monday evening and Tuesday. Avoid travel on or under steep slopes where new snow is warming and producing rollerballs and small avalanches. Keep an eye on what is above you and don't linger under anything that looks wet, sketchy, and poorly attached to the mountain, including glide cracks.

Avalanche Discussion

Tuesday should mark the last day we talk about wet avalanche concerns and slick, icy surfaces for a bit. Snow levels will drop sharply on Tuesday evening, ushering in colder temperatures and more substantial precipitation. This shift should finally allow the snowpack to begin building again.

It’s been a wet and wild week across the region. Last week’s atmospheric river wiped out much of the mid- and low-elevation snowpack and even brought rain nearly to the summit of Mt. Hood. Expect rain rills and hard, refrozen surfaces on most aspects at these upper elevations. Not surprisingly, backcountry travelers also reported some very large avalanches across the region, including one on the Sandy Glacier. 

In general, you won't find much snow until you get above 6000 ft. Between 6-7000 ft, snow coverage is often patchy and limited to previously wind-loaded terrain. You’ll find a much more robust snowpack as you climb above 7000ft. Keep that in mind these coming days. It won’t take much new snowfall and wind for the upper elevations and some middle elevation terrain to come into play, avalanche-wise. 

With the warm start to the 25-26 winter season, we have less snowpack information than usual to start daily forecast operations. For zones and elevation bands with less snow than needed for avalanche hazard, we will issue a forecast with No Rating. Anticipated avalanche and weather conditions will still be updated daily. NWAC will issue an avalanche danger rating for a zone when enough snow to produce avalanches has accumulated at middle and upper elevations.
