Avalanche Activity

Wet snow represents the main danger.

Over a wide area up to 10 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen since yesterday above approximately 2500 m. Since Friday on steep slopes numerous medium-sized avalanches occurred naturally, in particular avalanches with origins in high-altitude starting zones. Above approximately 2200 m snow will fall on Tuesday. Up to 20 cm of snow will fall above approximately 2500 m. Natural avalanches are possible. Above approximately 2000 m moist and wet avalanches are possible. In particular on very steep slopes and at the base of rock walls medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large wet avalanches are possible. In some places avalanches can penetrate near-ground layers of the snowpack. Ground avalanches are possible in particular on steep shady slopes. Most and wet avalanches can be released by small loads.

Snowpack Structure

The snowpack is moist. The rain will give rise to increasing and thorough wetting of the snowpack in all aspects below approximately 2200 m. These conditions will cause a slow weakening of the snowpack.
