In sintesi

On Saturday Wind Slab avalanches were triggered on North through East slopes.  I will continue to be wary of steep slopes (35 degrees and steeper) at and above treeline that may have been loaded by Friday's West wind.

Wind Slabs that were built by Friday's Strong West wind continued to be reactive on Saturday.  I observed many avalanches at Tam Rim on Saturday, one of which was D 1.5 (see picture).  All were skier triggered.  Saturday was calm and I was surprised that it was still possible to trigger avalanches.

With continuing Light wind and relatively warm temperatures I anticipate that these avalanches will become more stubborn, and eventually the problem will disappear.  Nonetheless, Sunday is too soon to disregard this avalanche problem.

If you are venturing up high on Sunday you can always play it safe by choosing less steep and less convex slopes.

Avalanche Discussion

Instabilities have been limited to the recent storm snow from late last week.  This constitutes the upper 30 cm. or less of the snowpack.  At this point these weaknesses all appear to be non-persistent snow grains (newer snow crystals and broken or disintegrating snow crystals).  Today I was impressed by the propogation of some of the avalanches that I saw.

There is a rain / melt-freeze crust beneath this latest snow.  It doesn't appear to be the culprit in recent avalanches, and numerous observations point to good bonding at the crust interface.  I'll still be keeping my eye on it for the next couple days (heck it's not too far down there).

There aren't any significant weaknesses in our mid or lower snowpack.
