Recently drifted snow may be reactive to a human trigger. Evaluate snow carefully keeping in mind in some places the snow will be firm and unreactive with areas of softer potentially reactive snow nearby. Watch for areas of new and active drifting snow today. If the new snow exceeds the forecast totals or forms large drifts, the danger rating will increase beyond the current MODERATE rating.  

The Lion Head Summer Trail remains the best option if climbing to the summit from Pinkham Notch. Be sure to check the slatboards for the trail status.

    Watch for new wind slabs developing today from the 3-4” of new snow overnight and this morning. The new snow is very light density with little total snow water equivalent (SWE) involved, potentially limiting as a new avalanche problem. Nonetheless, new snow combined with an ideal wind (25-40 mph from west) is the formula for new wind slabs that will be reactive to a human trigger. If you see signs of instability, don’t let the numbers guide you, use caution, especially considering the mix of new and recent snow.  

    Wind slabs formed from the weekend’s storm are on the way to becoming less reactive, though cold temperatures over the last couple of days will have slowed settlement somewhat. Be weary of the larger, softer drifts of snow found in sheltered terrain behind rock buttresses, and under the small cliffs where the softer snow accumulates. This softer snow will be more likely triggered by a skier or climber.

Avalanche Discussion

Yesterday skies cleared and provided great opportunities to finally see how the weekend storm impacted the terrain. In Tuckerman Ravine, evidence of an avalanche was obvious. The avalanche originated in the lower Center Headwall and swept the ravine floor. An avalanche crown was spotted in Huntington Ravine as well, both on east aspects with westward fetch of the Alpine Garden above. Overall, snowpack size has increased building longer, wider snow fields. More of the exposed rocks are now covered. These changes create larger bed surfaces for future avalanches to run wider and longer, less unencumbered by terrain restraints. The snowpack itself is a mix of hard wind-scoured surfaces, firm slabs compacted by strong winds with softer snow easily found in the mix.
