Snowpack

The near-surface layers of the snowpack lie on faceted weak layers or on surface hoar (hoar frost), especially in the north. This mainly affects places that are generally protected from the wind. In all regions, there are some faceted weak layers deeper in the snowpack. These are still prone to triggering in isolated cases, especially on western, northern and eastern slopes. With strong westerly winds in some places, small snowdrift accumulations developed in some localities in the high Alpine regions on the Northern Alpine Ridge.

There is still very little snow on the southern flank of the Alps and in central Grisons, so ski tours are still hardly possible in some places.

Outlook

On Thursday there will be the last foehn-like clear spells in the east. Otherwise, precipitation will set in from the west. The snowfall level will initially be around 2000 m in the west and 1800 m in the east. There will be a strong southwesterly wind. During the night to Friday, the snowfall level will rapidly drop to low altitudes. Snow will fall on Friday, especially in the east. In the west there will be clear spells, in the south it will be quite sunny. There will be a strong to stormy wind from the north.

From Thursday midday to Friday afternoon, 20 to 40 cm of snow is expected on the northern flank of the Alps and in the west. In the west, up to 60 cm of snow will fall above approximately 2200 m. The avalanche danger will increase widely with new fallen snow and sometimes storm force winds from midday on Thursday, this will be particularly significant in the west and on the northern flank of the Alps. From Thursday evening, naturally triggered avalanches are increasingly expected in the west and north, even major ones.
