Avalanche Summary

You can trigger an avalanche where recent wind and new snow created a strong slab on top of weak snow. The most dangerous slopes are those facing north to east, just below a ridgeline or along the edges of a gully, where wind-blown snow builds up. If you see snow blowing onto a slope, notice cracks in the snow, or feel a collapse as you travel, these are signs to move to low-angle terrain or a more wind-sheltered slope. Safer areas are found lower in the terrain, below treeline, and on slopes protected from the wind.
