Avalanche Activity

Increase in danger of moist avalanches as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation.

On extremely steep sunny slopes numerous small and, in isolated cases, medium-sized dry and moist snow slides are to be expected as the day progresses, in particular at the base of rock walls, and in steep rocky terrain. The fresh snow of the last seven days as well as the wind slabs can still be released in some cases, in particular on extremely steep slopes, and at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack, when entering gullies and bowls for example. On very steep sunny slopes the likelihood of avalanches will increase during the day. To some extent avalanches can be released in deep layers and reach medium size.

Snowpack Structure

Sunshine and high temperatures will give rise on Tuesday to increasing moistening of the snowpack in particular on very steep sunny slopes in particular at low and intermediate altitudes. Hardly any mostly small slab avalanches have been released by people in the last few days. The various wind slabs have bonded generally well with the old snowpack. Weak layers exist in the old snowpack in all aspects. Snow depths vary greatly above approximately 2400 m, depending on the infuence of the wind. Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas and at high altitude a little snow is lying. At low and intermediate altitudes less snow than usual is lying. As a consequence of highly fluctuating temperatures and solar radiation a crust formed on the surface, in particular below approximately 2300 m on very steep sunny slopes.

Tendency

In the afternoon as the temperature drops there will be only a very slight increase in the danger of wet avalanches.
