Avalanche Activity

GC31/1 New snow Strong W\'ly unstable windslab gullies+NE-SE, asp. abv 850m, fragile cornices. Old snow icy serious! Considerable Haz

Forecast Snow Stability: The existing snowpack will be firm and icy in most areas giving high potential for serious uncontrolled slips on steeper slopes. New snow driven on by Westerly winds will form unstable windslab in wind sheltered locations, greatest accumulations will mainly be in sheltered gullies and on slopes with North-East to South-East aspect above 850 metres, other aspects may be affected by cross loading, Fresh cornices will be fragile. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Overnight the freezing level will briefly rise above the summits. A return to colder conditions will follow with the freezing level lowering to around 450 metres. Frequent snow showers which may be heavy at times and strong to gale Westerly winds will affect the area. A degree of uncertainty exist around new snow quantities. Observed Weather Influences: There was a return to colder conditions overnight with snow showers affecting slopes above 500 metres. Winds have been generally Westerly fresh. The freezing level is around 700 metres. ObservedSnowStability: The older snowpack is firm and icy in most locations where stability is good. Localised deposits of moderately bonded windslab exist in wind sheltered locations, mainly gullies and hollows with a North-East to South-East aspect above 850 metres. These areas are generally avoidable. The avalanche hazard is Low.
