Avalanche Activity

Watch out for new snow on hard ground.

During the last snowfall period, 30 - 60 cm of new snow was added in our mountains, most of it in the Low Tatras and Veľká Fatra. The situation is gradually stabilising. The danger is concentrated in places where snow has fallen on old hard ground. Smooth grassy slopes and very steep slopes above 35° are particularly dangerous. Snow stabilises more slowly in the north and in shady locations, so caution is needed there. Below the upper forest line and at lower altitudes there is significantly less snow, so the situation is more stable there. On the southern sunny slopes, avalanches or small avalanches caused by sunlight may appear.

Snowpack Structure

There are two distinct layers in the snow cover. Old frozen snow forms the base. The second layer is the new snow of which about 60 cm has fallen. The interface of these two layers can form a potential slippery layer for avalanches. The total height of snow in our mountains is 10-120 cm.
