Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Some patches of shallow, unstable, fresh windslab will continue to build throughout the period on North through East to South-East aspects. These isolated accumulations will be above 800 metres in wind sheltered locations. Gully tops and Coire rims being most affected. Small fresh cornices may also develop in these locations. Deposition is not expected to be significant. The older snowpack where found will remain stable and be firm and icy. The avalanche hazard will be Low.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: There will be isolated light showers throughout the period, initially falling as snow below around 400 metres, then, during Thursday afternoon, only as snow to higher elevations as the freezing level rises. Overnight Strong North-Westerly Winds will ease to Moderate South-Westerlies during Thursday morning, then increase to Very Strong South South-Westerly by the end of the day. The freezing level will rise steadily from Thursday morning from initially 400 metres to around Summit level by dusk. Observed Weather Influences: A day of occasional squally showers, these being of snow and graupel down to 400 metres. Winds were Fresh North North-Westerly on the tops. Freezing level was well below summit levels, at around 500 metres. ObservedSnowStability: A slight dusting of fresh snow and Graupel above 500 metres. No significant accumulations were observed. The older snowpack firming up in the colder temperatures and becoming hard and icy. Greatest patches of this older snow are found above 800 metres, on North through East to South-East aspects in the higher coires, and along summit ridgelines. The avalanche hazard is Low.
