GC8/1 Snow showers WSW winds unstable w.slab gullies+NW-N-E slopes 850m+ cornices fragile haz considerable

Forecast Snow Stability: Slopes exposed to the recent strong South-West to Westerly winds will remain scoured in many locations. Unstable windslab will exist in sheltered summit gullies and on slopes with a North-Westerly through North to Easterly aspect mainly above 850 metres, Gully exits and corrie headwalls will be particularly affected. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable. Cornices will be fragile.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: It will be dry for much of the night with a return to snow showers on Saturday. Daytime winds will be mainly fresh West-South-Westerly. The freezing level will briefly rise above the summits early in the morning then lowering to 500 metres by the end of the day. Observed Weather Influences: New snow to most levels and Westerly winds which were strong at times have affected the area overnight and this morning. The freezing level is around 250 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Unstable windslab has formed in sheltered summit gullies and on slopes with a Northerly to Easterly aspect mainly above 850 metres. Many exposed Westerly slopes have been scoured by wind action. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
