Avalanche Activity

NC for 26/2. Dry and mild. Some instabilities remaining in windslab on N through E to SE aspects above 800m. Moderate hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: The snowpack will slowly consolidate in the milder conditions. However, instabilities will remain, these mainly on wind sheltered Northerly through East to South-East aspects above 800 metres. Below this level the moist snowpack will slowly thaw and stability will be better. Windward aspects will remain icy and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: It will be a mild day with the freezing level around the summits. It will be generally dry. Gale to storm force winds will be from the South-South-West. Observed Weather Influences: A dry day with some pleasant sunshine during the morning. The 500 metre freezing level rose slowly through the day. Westerly winds were light to moderate. ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack is starting to consolidate in the settled conditions. However, areas of unstable windslab remain on mainly wind-sheltered North through East to South-East aspects above 800 metres. A large avalanche which recently occurred was observed on a South-Easterly aspect at 1000 metres. Below 800 metres there are isolated areas of windslab which are more stable. Windward aspects at all levels are scoured and stable. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
