Avalanche Activity

CM for 15/01/23: Weak windslab NE , E to S aspects above 900m. Fragile new cornices. Considerable Hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: New snowfall, strong winds and redistribution of existing snow will see weak windslab become deeper and more extensive on steep East to South aspects above 900m. Very sheltered North-East facing gullies may also be affected. New fragile cornice development anticipated over steepest lee slopes. Better stability at lower altitudes, on ridges and all wind scoured locations. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Snow showers continuing overnight then dying out before dawn. Very strong North-Westerly airflow. Becoming noticeably colder. Observed Weather Influences: Snow showers during the morning became more organised and heavier later. Strong South-East winds, later Southerly then South-Westerly. Progressively cooler. ObservedSnowStability: Weak windslab now lies on steep North-West through North to East aspects above 900m. Most affected locations are gully exits, lee areas below col summits and the top of coire backwalls. Steepest of these now overhung by soft, weak cornices. Better stability on ridges and recently scoured locations. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
