Avalanche Activity

The wind slabs of the last few days represent the main danger.

As a consequence of a strong wind from westerly directions, wind slabs formed at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions. The fresh and somewhat older wind slabs can be released even by a single winter sport participant in particular on very steep north, east and southeast facing slopes. In particular in high Alpine regions these avalanche prone locations are more prevalent. Gradual decrease in danger of moist and wet avalanches as the temperature drops.

Snowpack Structure

10 to 20 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen since Monday above approximately 2300 m. The sleet gave rise to moistening of the snowpack below approximately 2500 m. As a consequence of falling temperatures a crust will form on the surface. The fresh and somewhat older wind slabs are bonding only slowly with the old snowpack in particular on steep shady slopes above approximately 2400 m. Snow depths vary greatly at intermediate and high altitudes, depending on the infuence of the wind.
