In sintesi

Warm overnight temperatures will start an all melt, no freeze scenario lasting until Wednesday.

Avoid any exposure to overhead hazard and stick to conservative terrain.

Problemi valanghivi

  • Cornices

    • Alta quota
    • Limite del bosco
    • Sotto il limite del bosco
    Probabilità
    Possible
    Dimensione
    1–2

Cornices will become more reactive as temperatures continue to rise with no overnight recovery. Give cornices a wide birth and avoid traveling on slopes below these large triggers.

  • Loose Wet

    • Alta quota
    • Limite del bosco
    • Sotto il limite del bosco
    Probabilità
    Likely - Very Likely
    Dimensione
    1–2

Sunday was very warm and no overnight freeze/ recovery is in the forecast until wed evening. Expect the avalanche hazard to rise as the heat percolates deeper in to the snowpack Monday afternoon / Tuesday.

  • Wet Slabs

    • Alta quota
    • Limite del bosco
    • Sotto il limite del bosco
    Probabilità
    Possible - Likely
    Dimensione
    1–2

Recent storm snow has become moist -wet. Slopes that previously held a storm slab, will likely transition to a wet slab problem. Slab activity is most prevalent in areas where a slab sits over a crust.

Confidence

Moderate

  • We are uncertain about how the timing or intensity of warming will affect the snowpack.

Avalanche Summary

Natural wet loose and wet slab avalanches up to sz 1.5 observed in the highway corridor on Sunday.

Field team in Connaught creek observed a natural size 2 wet loose avalanche on Sunday AM.

Two reports of skier triggered size 2 slab avalanches on Friday. One from from Quartz creek, and a second on the Thorington.

Snowpack Summary

We are currently experiencing all melt no freeze spring conditions.

Up to 40cms of recent storm snow has become moist - wet on the surface of the snowpack. Below this recent snow, a crust can be found in most locations.

The mid - lower snowpack is well settled but we expect to see some large avalanches as the warm temperatures permeate the snowpack.

Weather Summary

Warm temps with no overnight freeze until Tuesday evening.

Tonight Sunny with cloudy periods. Alpine Low 5°C. Freezing level(FZL) 2700m. Ridgetop wind SW 15-35 km/h.

Mon Sunny with cloudy periods. Alpine high 8°C. FZL 3100m. Wind SW 15 gusting to 40km/h.

Tues Showers. 6mm rain. Alpine High 9°C. FZL 3000m. Wind SW 15 gusting to 40.

Wed Flurries, 7 cm. High 3 °C. FZL 2800m. Wind NE 15-25 km/h.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • A moist or wet snow surface, pinwheeling, and natural avalanches are all indicators of a weakening snowpack.
  • Avoid travelling on slopes below cornices.
  • Keep in mind that the high density of wet avalanches can make them destructive.
