In sintesi

Large wet snow avalanches are possible in isolated areas Tuesday.  As the surface snow becomes wet, limit your exposure to slopes with large overhanging cornices, open glide cracks or very steep slopes baking in the sun.

    After a relatively mild Monday night, any surface crust that does form should break down relatively quickly as temperatures and freezing levels rise on Tuesday.  Tuesday may not present obvious signs of increasing instability like pinwheels, or rollerballs.  If you find yourself sinking into wet surface snow,  avoid traveling on or below very steep sunny slopes.  Also avoid lingering below open slopes with large overhanging cornices or open glide cracks.  It's in these areas that large wet snow avalanches may release with or without your help and become large as they entrain additional snow downslope.

Avalanche Discussion

We've been in a fairly typical spring-time pattern since Friday with cool overnight lows refreezing the surface snow and mild days that soften the snow surface to varying degrees.  A weather system that came through over the weekend produced very little new snow in the Hurricane Ridge area.  Observed wet snow avalanches have been minimal over the last few days.  Don't let that lull you into a sense of complacency as we head into the warmest day this week.  The snowpack is still transitioning from a winter-like snowpack to a spring-time snowpack.  This transition can produce large avalanches with little warning as rocks shed snow, cornices fail, and wet snow avalanches that start small entrain more surface snow as they move down steep slopes.  Cooler temperatures should arrive late Tuesday night to help decrease the chance of wet snow avalanches. 

Spring Forecast Schedule:  NWAC will issue a danger rating every day for the Olympics beginning Friday, April 2nd  - Sunday, April 18th. 

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
