Late-March storms have buried weak layers of faceted snow that formed earlier in the month. Before this most recent storm, human-triggered avalanches occurred in neighboring zones (Owl Creek and in the Salmon Headwaters). The last storm dropped 2-3 feet of new snow in this zone, and these weak layers are now buried beneath a thick slab.
Observations from the Banner Summit area have been sparse, and it's unclear how widespread these weak layers are in this zone. We do know they will be most common on slopes that face E-NE-N-NW, and are capable of producing dangerous avalanches large enough to bury a skier or rider. Whether or not these weak layers are widespread, the 2-3 feet of new snow in this zone needs more time to stabilize. It's best to treat steep slopes as guilty until proven innocent, and to stick to gentler-angled terrain.
ADDITIONAL DISCUSSIONWhile wind drifts that formed during this last storm are becoming less touchy, slopes that were loaded by the wind are more likely to break down to the buried weak layers described above. Use extra caution on any slope that shows signs of wind loading—including a pillowed appearance, stiffer or denser snow, or a rippled texture.
