In sintesi

Avalanche danger is increasing to Considerable on Monday as extreme winds and more snow are forecasted. Human triggered avalanches are likely on wind loaded terrain at mid to upper elevations.  Avoid slopes greater than 35 degrees where you see signs of recently drifted snow on leeward terrain features.

Backcountry users found reactive wind slabs over the weekend that were 6-18 inches deep. These slabs will grow thicker and more reactive with the forecasted wind and snow.  It is likely that you can trigger avalanches that are deeper on Monday, and destructive enough to bury, injure, or kill you. You will find wind loaded pockets on leeward slopes, where surfaces are pillow-like or textured by the wind. The snow will feel stiffer and possibly “hollow”, unlike non wind-affected areas.  Strong winds could lead to deposits in locations that aren't where you would normally find them. Avoid these wind loaded slopes in areas that are steeper than 35 degrees.

Avalanche Discussion

Expect challenging conditions with variable snow surfaces and limited visibility. Travel in areas you're familiar with or carry appropriate routefinding equipment. This inclement weather will continue at least through Wednesday in the Cascades, and avalanche danger will increase as the storm progresses.

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
