Weak layers in the old snowpack can be released in very isolated cases by winter sport participants. Avalanches can penetrate down to the ground and reach medium size. The avalanche prone locations are rather rare but are difficult to recognise. Below the tree line from a snow sport perspective, in most cases insufficient snow is lying. In steep terrain there is a danger of falling on the hard snow surface.
In all regions only a small amount of snow is lying for the time of year. The snowpack is well consolidated and its surface has a crust that is strong in many cases. In very isolated cases weak layers exist in the old snowpack especially on very steep shady slopes. This applies in particular above approximately 2400 m. Hard wind slabs have bonded well with the old snowpack.
