Since December 5, snowfall has covered a variety of surfaces from crusts to weak, faceted snow grains. These layers exist at the upper elevations and on shaded slopes at the mid-elevations. Although we have not seen many avalanches on these layers, there has been some activity on steep slopes at the mid and upper elevations. If an avalanche occurs on these layers, slab depths could be up to 3 feet in depth. The variability of the buried weak layers and areas of loaded snow, make it important to check a slope's stability before crossing into steep terrain.
